Bulletproof Coffee, the best thing since sliced bread
I find myself looking forward to getting up in the morning just for this cup of coffee. So if you’re scratching your head and wondering what in the world bulletproof coffee is, well, get ready!
So at first I thought this sounded a bit crazy, but it’s actually really tasty. and filling. Often this is my breakfast and I have to remind myself to eat lunch! You’ll see variations of this recipe, but here is my take on it.
8-12 oz freshly brewed coffee
1 Tablespoon MCT oil (typically from coconut oil)
1 Tablespoon grassfed butter
2 drops Copaiba essential oil
1 Tablespoon whey protein powder
How to make it?
Mix up in a blender. This mixture makes the creamiest, most delicious cup of coffee you’ve ever had. Yes, with butter in it.
The bottom two ingredients are my add ons to what you’ll typically see based on my needs – but let’s talk through all the ingredients.
Coffee – because coffee. enough said. Just pick the good stuff.
MCT oil – It stands for medium chain triglyceride oil. It contains medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides, and due to their shorter length, MCT oil digests easily – in fact MCTs enter your cells without the need to be broken down, so they can be used as an immediate source of energy. And (ketoers take note) MCTs can also be converted into keytones in the liver. These ketones can pass through your blood-brain barrier, making them a convenient source of energy for your brain cells. MCT also fills you up, and keeps you feeling full, reducing the desire to snack, or to overdo it at lunch time. There is a long list of additional benefits too – like weight loss, heart health, and support of healthy cholesterol levels
Grassfed butter – I know it sounds weird, but bare with me. Your body needs good fats for hormone balance and brain health. Getting these fats from grass-fed butter also gets you omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, CLA (a fatty acid with powerful fat-loss benefits), and antioxidants. Grass-fed butter is also high in butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that supports a healthy inflammatory response. Don’t short cut here. Get the grassfed butter. Non-grass-fed butter simply does not contain the nutritional punch of grass-fed butter. And it makes the coffee creamy dreamy. So there’s that….

Whey Protein – With the keto diet, you are eating LOW carb, moderate protein, and high fat. I was really struggling to get enough protein each day. so I started adding this to give me a little boost (and surprising it makes great foam). It also contains an incredible range of essential amino acids, which are absorbed quickly into your system.
