Turmeric Essential Oil is amazing stuff
The benefits of turmeric root are extensive, many find benefits particularly in these constituents in the turmeric root: Curcuminoids and Turmerones.
Curcumin has been the subject of a lot of scientific research. It’s a powerful substance BUT it’s also difficult for the body to absorb and utilize without a little help. Researchers have found ways to make curcumin more bioavailable in the body, by adding other components that allow it to be absorbable, for instance black pepper. The high levels of turmerones in turmeric essential oil also aid in curcumin absorption. (Curcumin is on our DeepBlue Polyphenol Complex. Another amazing product worthy of its own post)
Most turmeric essential oils on the market are NOT actually essential oils, they are CO2 extracts. A CO2 extract is done with a solvent such as hexane. Analysis of CO2 extracts of Turmeric resulted in some of the aromatic constituents (turmerones), some of the curcuminoids (curcumin)…….. and some of the solvent. Not something I am terribly excited about. Are you with me?
doTERRA does a pure steam distillation off the Turmeric root. With that, you ONLY get the aromatic components – the turmerones.
But what are turmerones good for?
Turmerones increase the antioxidant capacity of the body, support cardiovascular health, support a healthy inflammatory response, offers respiratory support, aides in brain function, improve skin health, will help you get a good night’s sleep…..AND allows for more absorption of Curcumin (so pair it with turmeric root for even greater benefit)
Need a reminder of why we need antioxidants?
Of course…Antioxidants help counter the damaging effects of free radicals which are produced naturally during the process of oxidation in our bodies as well through exposure to external oxidant substances. Free radicals have been implicated not just in aging but also in many (uhhhh….most) chronic issues.
Since turmerones also support a healthy inflammatory response, daily use is beneficial for anyone with chronic concerns. My recommendation is to use it both internally and topically. I take Turmeric, Yarrow Pom, Frankincense, and Pink Pepper in a capsule daily, but I also use turmeric along with Deep Blue Rub when I have a joint or muscle group that needs a little extra love.
Any of my RA friends taking methotrexate? Well, I have some good news for you. As you, I’m sure, are aware, mtx is tough on the liver. A 2015 study indicates that turmeric may protect your liver from the effects of this drug most people both love & hate.
Turmerone research is on-going.
In September of 2014, researchers from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Julich, Germany examined the effects of turmerones on a few different aspects of neural stem cell function in vitro (isolated stem cell in culture) and in vivo (in rats).
Results were promising – neural cell production increased in vitro and in vivo. As research continues, it will be interesting to see what this means for people dealing with neurodegenerative diseases.
