We all need after-sun care for our skin after a day in the sun

Sometimes you sunscreen and take precautions and still end up with a little too much sun.  Many of the meds we take can make us more sensitive to the sun, so it’s important to have some safe ways to get relief. I’ve found that making sure I am taking my Omega-3 supplements really helps me handle the sun better,  but sometimes we need a few extra tools on hand for after-sun care.

My grands are here to visit for a couple weeks, and we took a trip to our favorite beach for the day before their momma returned home.   We hadn’t been there with all my girls together for quite a few years.   We have so many great memories of going to Carolina Beach.

The little guys were all about waves and sandcastles, and making little friends.,  just like my girls were when they were younger.  It was a glorious day filled with fun, and Britt’s donuts, and sand, and a little too much sun.

There are some amazing natural ways to take care  of our skin. Essential Oils offer SO MUCH relief.  It is extremely important to use high quality, pure. oils or you could add to your  issues. Synthetic ingredients can make sunburn worse.   We brought the skin soother spray with us, which helped tremendously.  Today is games, crafts, and movies —  and Skin Soothing  Salve.

Let’s look at some of my favorite oils for aftersun care include

Peppermint essential oil is known as a natural cooling agent. The menthol in peppermint helps to soothe the discomfort that happens  after a day in the sun. Peppermint  helps to hydrate your skin and cools you down  immediately.

Lavender essential oil works incredibly well  to soothe all kinds of skin issues (like bites, scrapes, and, yes, burns!) It relieves discomfort and supports your body as it deals with getting too much sun.

Frankincense essential oil will help to nourish your over-sunned skin and get it back to normal

Eucalyptus essential oil is another cooling oil due to its menthol content and will quickly relieve too-much-sun discomfort

We utilize these oils in a few different ways:

Skin Soother Spray:  Make a handy spray.  In a 2 ounce spray bottle, add 4 drops each Peppermint, Frankincense & Lavender and top with aloe juice.

Chill Towel: Soak a towel in water containing 4-5 drops of eucalyptus and pla

ce on the affected area with the towel for soothing and cooling  relief.

Cooling  Gel: Add 1- 2 drops of peppermint essential oil to 1-2 tsp of aloe vera gel. Apply  gently over your sun-damaged skin.

Soothing Bath: Mix a handful of oatmeal,  a cup of Epsom salts and 7-8 drops of lavender oil in a tub of lukewarm water. This soothing bath will effectively alleviate the discomfort caused by sunburn.

And the perennial favorite …..


1/2 c. extra-virgin coconut oil
1/2 c. avocado oil
3 tbsp. beeswax pastilles (0.75 oz.)
3/4 tsp. vitamin E oil
1/2 tsp. arrowroot powder (to cut greasiness)

Melt coconut oil, avocado oil and beeswax on double boiler. When fully melted, remove from heat. Stir in vitamin E and arrowpowder and then add oils as follows:  Add 10 drops each lavender essential oil, peppermint essential oil, and frankincense essential oil.

We use this salve for sun relief, as well as just about any other skin issue you can think of.  It’s definitely something we have on hand nearly all the time.
