Simple and AMAZING DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel

Flax seeds are packed with nutrients and a great addition to your diet.

Did you know they are also amazing to use topically in haircare products?

Flaxseed is one of the best natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health, immune support, brain health and more… but did you know its also great for strengthening and moisturizing your hair?  Flaxseed can improve elasticity and prevent breakage. The omegas also support healthy – and not itchy – scalp!

Flaxseed is rich in antioxidants (add these to your diet – I mean it!) and when used topically can keep your hair follicles healthy, encouraging hair growth!

We’re going to use flaxseed to make a natural hair gel that 

  • Defines and moisturizes hair without being stiff or “crunchy”
  • Provides great hold
  • Reduces frizz
  • Makes hair soft and sleek
  • Makes hair naturally healthy & shiny

By adding in some essential oils we can make this hair gel even more amazing! Here are a few great options:

Roman Chamomile -adds shine and softness to hair, and soothes the scalp.

Rosemary – helps to soothe both dry, dull hair as well as overly oily hair and can help prevent split ends.

Lavender – can improve hair strength, in addition to increasing hair growth, making hair more difficult to break

Ylang Ylang – ideal for dry scalps, ylang ylang can improve hair texture and reduce hair breakage.

Peppermint – can increase hair thickness and length as well as strengthen hair follicles for stronger hair. 

And the best part – all this goodness is fast and simple to make, plus it is extremely cost effective! We generally have flaxseeds on hand because we include them our diet – so I didn’t even need to go get any ingredients.

I usually use doTERRA’s Healthy Hold Glaze and am very happy with it, but I was IMPRESSED with the results from this DIY. I’m dealing with some hair struggles from one of my meds, and honestly, my hair hasn’t felt this soft and healthy since I started taking the med. 

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup whole flaxseeds
  • 2 cups water
  • 6-10 drops doTERRA essential oils of choice. I used about 8 drops of Roman Chamomile

Directions:

In a saucepan, add water and whole flax seeds. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer until thick/gel-like, approximately 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and strain flax seeds out.

Allow to cool until close to room temperature.

Add in essential oils and stir until well combined. Place in airtight jar and store in a cool, dry place. 

To use, apply a small quantity on towel-dried hair and style as normal.

This can also be used as a hair mask – apply liberally hair, cover (with shower cap) and allow to sit for 30-60 minutes. *You could do this as you soak in the tub. Rinse and shampoo/condition/style as normal.
