Coping with the emotional struggles that come with a chronic illness

Not only do spoonies deal with a lot of physical issues, but we also have emotional struggles.

It’s exhausting to be in pain; limited mobility can be extraordinarily discouraging and cause stress as well as frustration to run rampant. Our sleep is adversely affected, which makes it difficult to maintain any kind of positive outlook.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Most of us find ways to cope, tricks of the trade if you will. I use my oils and supplements to support not only my physical health, but also all those emotional issues (the ones I listed and a whole lot more). Physical and mental needs go hand in hand; in order for us to live the fullest life possible, we need to tend to both of those needs.

I am amazed at the effectiveness of oils for supporting my emotional health. I’m going to run through a few blends from doTERRA that I have found extremely helpful. I use many single oils too, but if you’re just getting started with oils, pre-made blends are  simple.

Let’s take a look at six different blends

Motivate is a blend of mint and citrus essential oils. This combo helps me get focused and on track. I’m sure you all have felt the “I just want to lay on the couch and binge watch Netflix” feeling, am I right? Motivate helps get me moving – even somedays that means I’m still sitting and elevating sore joints, I’ll at least be writing or designing at the ol’ laptop. And, as with all oils, it is a multi-tasker, it also helps with occasional head tension (because of the mint) and even tummy upset.

Peace combines floral and mint essential oils that helps me feel reassured and content. It’s easy to feel resentment and frustration- even anxiousness or fear – when we look our illness in the face. Sometimes we need to slow down and take a breath – and using Peace in the diffuser helps me take that moment and release the anxious feelings or even relax enough for sleep. If you struggle with focus, this is the blend you want to reach for. And since it contains oils like Lavender, Clary Sage and Frankincense, it can help soothe skin issues.

Console is a combination of floral and woodsy oils. Console promotes feelings of comfort and hope and counteracts the feelings of grief, sadness, and hopelessness that often come our way. While I am not usually drawn to floral scents, there is something about this blend that I connect with deeply. I know we all understand the feelings of grief and hopelessness that can wash over us seemingly unexpectedly. Console also offers respiratory help, so it’s a great one to reach for if you’re feeling a little gunky.

Helping you to forgive yourself

Forgive combines herbs and tree oils and helps release feelings of anger and guilt. I know that I struggled for a while with feeling like I was letting everyone (especially my family) down —even though I had no control over my disease. Forgiving ourselves is just a important as forgiving others for sure. It also helps us feel more content, which is certainly something I didn’t feel very much of there for a while. Forgive also offers circulatory support, so it’s a great addition to massage oils. We also diffuse it out on the porch to help keep the pests away in the summer months.

Passion is a rich warm blend of spice and herb oils. It can help ignite creativity and help us feel some of our old spark again. If you are feeling bored or disinterested in life (I get it, believe me), then try this in the diffuser. It also offers respiratory and circulatory support – and can help soothe and support women during menopause.

And last but not least, Cheer blends citrus and spice oils into a bright and uplifting aroma. If you feel low or blue, this one can help. It promotes feelings of optimism and hope. It smells a bit like jelly beans. I love it in the diffuser with lime oil (I have a roller blend with that as well). Whenever I feel disconnected from life, this is my go-to. And again, it’s great for many other things – like tired or stiff muscles/joints or for supporting healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Be Prepared

I hope you see now why I love having all of these oils in my arsenal to support my emotional health. If this speaks to you, I’d be honored to not only help you get these oils but also help you learn to use them. All of these blends are part of a starter set that not only comes with a powerful diffuser, but a year’s 25% discount, access to my education & support, plus a whole lot more. Contact me if you’d like to chat a bit more and see if it’s a good fit for you.

(Remember, if you need professional help – GET IT! There are times we all need extra help. Most of the oils can come along side any treatment recommended by your doctor, just be sure to talk with them about it)
