DIY: Deep Conditioner

In our household we have as many different hair types as people who live here. LOL. I have thinnish straight brown hair, my husband *had* dark curly curly. hair but there just isn’t very much of it anymore  and Hana has A LOT of curly, course, long hair. She rarely uses shampoo at all – instead she rinses it well and uses a bit of the doTERRA conditioner and then massages in a bit of coconut oil to leave in after she’s done. Sometimes we both need a little bit of extra deep conditioner though.

My hair has been a bit dry from more time in the sun than usual, so I went looking for a deep conditioner that was natural, effective, and SIMPLE. I try to make all my DIYs simple because some days I really have to monitor my energy levels. Anyone with chronic issues knows exactly what I mean.

This DIY meets is oh-so-easy and super inexpensive too


  • 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup sweet almond oil (jojoba or avocado are also good options)
  • 5 drops each Rosemary, Clary Sage, and Ylang Ylang essential oil (you can used different oils based on your preference and needs)
Combine all ingredients in bowl of stand mixer and whisk for 3-4 minutes. Place in lidded jar (I used an 8oz wide mouth canning jar)
To Use: After shampooing, work 1-2 tablespoons into hair starting with the ends. Leave on for at least 2 minutes. Rinse well. Allow a bit of hot water to run in the shower after rinsing to make sure tub isn’t slipper and to protect pipes from the coconut oil accumulating.
Use once or twice a week as needed.


Here are a few options for you to use in this recipe. There are many more oils that are beneficial to the hair and scalp, but this gives you a good place to start. And be sure to use only high quality oils like doTERRA.  Don’t grab oils from the discount bin and expect to get great results. 

Rosemary: for hair thickness and growth
Clary Sage: helps regulate oil production
Ylang Ylang: relaxing aroma eases stressful feelings
Lavender: soothes the scalp as well as dry skin and hair.
Cedarwood: stimulates the hair follicles by increasing circulation to the scalp
Lemongrass: strengthen your hair follicles and soothe an itchy and irritated scalp
Peppermint: stimulates the scalp
Melaleuca: soothe itchy or irritated scalp
